Political Storm Threatens 2026 World Cup: Could the US Lose Hosting Rights?

As football fans worldwide eagerly await the most anticipated sporting event that takes place every four years, the policies of US President Donald Trump are casting a shadow over the upcoming World Cup, sparking heated debate about America's right to host the tournament.

In a significant development reflecting the intersection of sports and politics, a fierce discussion is underway in numerous European capitals and beyond: Should we boycott the World Cup? Or should FIFA take more drastic action by stripping Washington of its hosting rights?

British MPs Demand US Exclusion from World Cup

In the United Kingdom, the debate has transcended the stadium terraces and reached the parliamentary floor, where MPs from various parties have called on the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to seriously consider the possibility of excluding the United States from hosting the World Cup until it demonstrates "clear commitment to international law and respect for the sovereignty of other nations."

These demands come amid a tense political context, with critics arguing that the unilateral policies pursued by the current US administration contradict the principles of neutrality and mutual respect that host nations should embody for the world's biggest sporting event.

Germany: Heated Debate Rules Out Boycott

Across the English Channel, the discussion in Germany was equally serious. Following a proposal by German Football Association Vice President Oke Göttlich, the association's executive committee held extensive meetings to deliberate available options.

The German FA emerged to firmly rule out the option of boycotting the tournament for the time being, emphasizing that "a boycott is not currently on the table." The statement added that the association "is in contact with representatives from politics, security, business, and sports in preparation for the tournament," indicating that the matter remains open for discussion and evaluation based on future political developments.

France Takes a Stand as Blatter Calls for Popular Boycott

In Paris, the French government decisively ruled out the option of boycotting the World Cup for now, preferring to maintain a separation between sports and politics at the official level. However, this official French position was met with a completely different stance from a prominent sports figure.

On platform X (formerly Twitter), former FIFA President Joseph Sepp Blatter issued a controversial call, urging football fans worldwide to stay away from the United States and refrain from traveling there to attend matches. Blatter's message carries significant weight, especially coming from a man who led FIFA for many years and understands the intricacies of organizing major tournaments.

An Exceptional World Cup with Unique Specifications

The ongoing political controversy highlights what was meant to be an exceptional tournament by all measures. Since 1994, the United States hasn't had the opportunity to host the World Cup alone, but it will now organize the largest tournament in history, featuring 48 teams, in a joint hosting arrangement with Canada and Mexico.

The tournament will feature 104 matches distributed across three countries, from June 11 to July 19, 2026. This joint organization was originally intended to showcase North America's ability to host a premier global sporting event, but it has now become a pressure card in an international political game.

Between Principle and Reality

The lingering question remains: Could FIFA actually take the step of excluding the United States? Practically speaking, this step seems unlikely due to the enormous legal and logistical complications, not to mention the massive financial penalties that could ensue. However, mounting political pressure might push FIFA to offer concessions or political guarantees, or perhaps issue statements affirming the independence of sports from politics.

In the end, the ordinary fan remains the biggest victim in the equation of sports and politics, as the world waits to see how FIFA will handle this crisis that threatens to disrupt the biggest football carnival on earth.
