Conflicting Reports Emerge on Downing of US Fighter Jet Over Iran

A U.S. fighter jet has been shot down over Iran, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing five-week-old conflict. While American officials confirm the aircraft was an F-15E Strike Eagle with a two-person crew, Iranian state media claims to have downed an advanced F-35 stealth fighter.

The incident, which occurred on April 3, 2026, has sparked a flurry of conflicting reports from both sides regarding the aircraft type and the fate of its crew.

Aircraft Type Discrepancy

The most significant point of contention involves the type of aircraft downed. According to U.S. and Israeli officials who spoke to multiple American news outlets including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, the lost aircraft was an F-15E Strike Eagle, a twin-engine, two-seat fighter jet.

However, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for shooting down a much more sophisticated F-35 Lightning II, a fifth-generation stealth fighter.

Independent analysis of wreckage photos published by Iranian state television appears to support the U.S. claim. Experts, including aviation analyst Justin Bronk, noted that the debris, particularly the vertical stabilizer section, is consistent with an F-15E from the 494th Fighter Squadron based at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom.

Crew Rescue and Search

The fate of the aircraft's two crew members remains a subject of intense speculation and conflicting narratives.

  • U.S. Reports of Rescue: U.S. media, including CBS News and Axios, reported that U.S. special forces successfully rescued one of the two crew members during a high-risk mission inside Iranian territory. The search for the second crew member continues.

  • Iranian Claims of Failure: Conversely, Iranian media outlets, citing unnamed sources, claimed that U.S. rescue attempts involving Black Hawk helicopters and C-130 aircraft failed completely. These reports allege that Iranian air defenses attacked the U.S. helicopters, forcing them to retreat from the area.

Iran Offers Reward

In a parallel development, Iranian state-affiliated television broadcast a statement urging residents of the southwestern Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province to search for any American pilots. A "valuable reward" was promised to anyone who captures an American pilot alive and hands them over to security forces.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of escalating attacks between the U.S.-Israeli alliance and Iran, which has included strikes on infrastructure targets and oil facilities across the region
