Souad Ben Krid: An Algerian Among Germany's 50 Most Powerful People

Frankfurt – Special

In a development reflecting a notable shift in Germany's economic power map, Franco-Algerian banker Souad Ben Krid has entered the list of Germany's 50 most powerful people for 2026, becoming one of the few Arab names to secure an advanced position on "THE POWER LIST" published by the German Axel Springer group, which tracks the most influential figures on the German scene.

The recognition crowns a career spanning nearly a quarter of a century in finance and banking, culminating in her appointment as Deputy Chairwoman of the Board of DZ Bank, one of Germany's largest banking institutions, effective 1 July 2026, following the announcement of her appointment in late February.

From Nordend to the Helm of a Major Bank

The road to the summit of German finance was not paved with roses for Souad Ben Krid. Born on 21 May 1976 in Frankfurt to an Algerian immigrant family, she grew up in the Nordend district alongside her seven siblings in a family environment far removed from the world of finance and business; her father worked at a printing press, while her mother was a cleaner at a bank.

Yet these modest beginnings were no obstacle to her ambition—rather, they served as motivation. Her parents were keen to pass on Algerian culture to their children, with Arabic spoken at home while she learned German at school—a linguistic and cultural duality that would later become one of the secrets of her success on a distinctly international path.

Academic Training Between Germany and France

Ben Krid studied management sciences at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt before continuing her training at Paris-Dauphine University in France, earning a degree in business administration and a degree in management sciences—an academic path combining the German and French university systems that gave her a dual intellectual foundation on which she would later rely in her career.

25 Years of Experience in Global Capital Markets

Ben Krid began her professional career in 2001 at Deutsche Bank, where she spent 16 years in capital markets, moving between Frankfurt, Dubai and London, and gaining extensive experience in trading, financing and international financial markets.

She later moved to Standard Chartered, where she took charge of strategic sales to institutional investors globally, and in Dubai oversaw capital markets and treasury for the Middle East and North Africa region.

In September 2022, she joined the board of DZ Bank, becoming the first woman to oversee capital markets at the institution, covering institutional clients, trading, retail clients, group treasury and structured finance—before being appointed Deputy Chairwoman of the Board, with oversight of capital markets, group treasury, structured finance and international branches.

Early Recognition of Influence

Her entry into the list of Germany's 50 most powerful people was not an isolated event; Manager Magazin had already selected her in 2024 for its list of the 100 most influential women in the German economy—early recognition of her growing weight in a sector where women had long been a minority in decision-making positions.

A Firm Algerian Identity

In remarks to Deutsche Welle, Ben Krid affirmed her attachment to her Algerian roots and her commitment to her Arab and Islamic identity. She also maintains her connection to her Algerian origins and is keen to pass on aspects of Algerian culture to her two daughters, particularly through traditional cuisine. In comments reported in a press report, she said she is keen to prepare "matlouh" and local dishes at home.

The Significance of an Inspiring Model

This trajectory carries profound significance for the elite reader; Souad Ben Krid is not merely a successful banker, but a model of Arab immigrant competence that managed to turn a dual identity from a challenge into an asset, and to carve out a position at the top of the European financial hierarchy—at a time when debates over the representation of women and people of immigrant background in economic decision-making centers are intensifying.

As she prepares to take up her new duties in July 2026, the question remains: will Ben Krid mark the beginning of a new wave of Arab talents leading major European financial institutions? Only time will tell—but what is certain is that her name is now inscribed on the list of Germany's 50 most powerful people, a recognition granted only to those who combine competence, vision and influence.
