Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum broke the world record in the marathon, with a time of two hours and five seconds.
This happened during the participation of Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptom (23 years old) in the Chicago Marathon, on the 8th of October.
The previous record was held by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge, with a time of 2h 1m 9s, which he broke in the marathon race in the German capital, Berlin, on September 25, 2022.
Before that, in 2018, the runner, Kiptum, participated in a marathon race held in his country, Kenya, wearing shoes that he borrowed from one of his friends, because he did not have enough money to buy sports shoes.
During his childhood, Kiptom was forced to herd sheep barefoot, and his father aspired for his son to excel in studies and work as an electrical engineer when he grew up. A BBC report published on Friday says:
Regarding his athletic beginnings, runner Kelvin Kiptum used to train in the streets and roads, because he did not have the money that would allow him to conduct training sessions outside the country. This is the same reason that made him also choose the marathon, even though what is common in the sport of athletics is that the runner specializes in organized speed, half-speed, or technical races inside stadiums, and as he grows older, he switches to the marathon, which is held in the open air.
According to the source, runner Kelvin Kiptom is looking forward to breaking the world record in the marathon race, and going under the two-hour threshold. But his coach Jervi Hakimzima advises him to be patient, to avoid injuries.
