"Trito" Security Operation Reveals Alleged Complicity of the "Makhzen" in Cross-Continental Drug Trade
In a significant security development, the Catalan police in northeastern Spain announced Tuesday the dismantling of a vast criminal network specialized in drug trafficking from Morocco to Europe, in a qualitative operation codenamed "Trito," once again highlighting what media reports describe as the "complicity of the Makhzen system" with international drug trafficking gangs.
Unprecedented Security Operation
According to the Spanish website "Parliament," approximately 150 personnel from various specialized units participated in this massive security operation, including the Criminal Investigation Division, the Central Coordination Room, public order units such as the Regional Operational Resources Unit, the Mobile Brigade, in addition to the Canine Unit and Drone Service.
The raids targeted approximately ten locations in two cities near Barcelona, where the principal leaders of the criminal network operating along the Morocco-Catalonia-Europe route were arrested. The scale of the security mobilization reflects the seriousness of this network and its pivotal role in cross-border drug trafficking.
Morocco: An Open Gateway for Cocaine Trafficking to Europe
Preliminary investigations, according to Spanish security sources, indicate that this network relied on organized logistical bases in Catalonia to receive drug shipments arriving from Morocco, storing them and re-exporting them to other European markets. Their operations include trafficking both cocaine and cannabis, confirming the diversity of their criminal activities.
This operation comes just weeks after the dismantling of a similar network on February 10, when Catalan police coordinated with their Italian counterparts to overthrow two interconnected networks, resulting in the arrest of 17 individuals. One network was responsible for transporting cannabis from Morocco and establishing logistical centers for storage, while the other coordinated transport and distribution operations toward Northern European countries.
Makhzen Complicity Under Scrutiny
What draws attention in these successive operations is the persistent description of Morocco as a "major hub for drug distribution to Europe with the complicity of the Makhzen system," as stated by the Spanish website. Observers emphasize that the persistence of these networks despite intensive security campaigns on the European side reflects what they describe as "the direct consequence of the economic and social failure" of the kingdom.
Analysts believe that the economic and social policies implemented in Morocco, which produce increasing poverty and vulnerability, create fertile ground for recruiting unemployed youth and exploiting them in international drug trafficking networks. The northern regions of the kingdom, particularly the Rif, have transformed into strongholds for cannabis trafficking toward the lucrative European market.
International Dimensions of a Worsening Phenomenon
The recurring trafficking operations from Morocco to Europe raise serious questions about the effectiveness of bilateral and multilateral security cooperation, and about the seriousness of Moroccan authorities in combating drug networks that use its coasts as launching points for their operations.
Available data suggests that the volume of drug trafficking from Morocco has become a genuine security challenge for European countries, which find themselves compelled to intensify their intelligence and field efforts to counter the flow of narcotics across the Mediterranean Sea.
The Catalan "Trito" operation remains a model of the growing complexity of cross-border organized crime networks, and of the tension point that Morocco represents in the international drug control equation, amid escalating accusations against the "Makhzen" of complicity or at least inability to control its borders and coasts, which are increasingly becoming open gateways for smuggling narcotics toward the European continent.
