36 thousand hectares of land for Italians to grow wheat and seeds in the desert

Algerian authorities have approved a second “large-scale” agricultural project with foreign partner Italian Bonifique Ferraris. The project will be implemented as planned in the Adra and Taghrout regions, using the latest technologies for wheat and seed production. This is part of what the leaders of the two countries in the region agreed upon.

In this regard, a senior official at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development told the Ecowork website that the Italian company Bonifique Ferrarissi, which specializes in agricultural production and crop rotation, obtained 30% of its profits from the Italian company Bonifique Ferrarisi in both Adrar and Toughert. He said that he gave permission to grant him 6,000 hectares of land... which is the second largest agricultural project implemented with foreign partners in the country's history to produce wheat and seeds.

According to the details available to Ecolok, the Algerian side’s approval of this “huge” project came in the wake of a recent meeting between Youssef Shalfa, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Fabrizio Saggio, advisor to the Italian Prime Minister on foreign affairs, which was disappointing. Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Algeria, and according to a previous statement by the Embassy of Rome in Algeria, there was talk a few days ago about the Mattei plan for the Italian government.

The process of finalizing all details related to the project is currently being prepared as quickly as possible, and it is expected that the framework agreement will be signed by the end of this month, once the work team has completed all the tasks assigned to it. In the project details.

If a framework agreement is signed in the coming weeks, this huge project will begin on an area of 36,000 hectares in the Adrar and Taghrout regions, and by the end it will produce wheat and seeds using ultra-modern technology. According to Al Shorouk sources, it will be this year.

During the meeting between Minister of Agriculture Youssef Shalfa and Counselor Fabrizio Saggio, all matters were discussed, including issues of training and technical cooperation in the Green Dam project, combating desertification, stabilizing sand dunes, and adapting to climate change.

As you know, the Italian company Bonific Ferrarese is considered the largest Italian company in the agricultural industry and is listed on the Milan Stock Exchange. Since 2022, the company has expressed interest in launching a project to produce durum and soft wheat in Russia. In Algeria, part of it is used to meet the country's needs, and the other part is exported to Italy to produce fabrics. Knowing that the European country is considered one of the largest countries in the world that consumes this type of product.

According to a document from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the industries being developed and classified as being of a strategic nature and which direct the transformation of products to meet market needs and limit imports are mainly maize, oilseeds, and cereals such as sugar. It is necessary to combine projects with an area of at least 250 hectares.

This project comes in addition to a $3.5 billion project launched by the Qatari Baladna Company about three weeks ago to produce the country's first milk powder, which will be established in three countries under the leadership of the state. Adderal Company occupies an area of 137 thousand hectares, and the production capacity of milk powder is estimated at 194 thousand tons annually, which is equivalent to half of Algeria’s demand for this substance.
