After being dismissed by the Detroit Lions on Tuesday afternoon, veteran Jamie Collins is now free to test the waters of free agency.
After the Lions' loss to the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football, head coach Dan Campbell compared Collins' effort level to that of teammate Alex Anzalone, signalling to many that Collins' time in Detroit was likely coming to an end.
"Does (Collins) work as hard as Alex (Anzalone)? "I don't believe so," Campbell clarified. "I believe Alex consistently performs at a high level." That's how he does things.
Despite the fact that the team had suitors for Collins, general manager Brad Holmes and another team were unable to reach an agreement on trade.
In Week 3, against the Baltimore Ravens, rookie Derrick Barnes and veteran Jalen Reeves-Maybin saw their roles grow as a result of Collins' departure.
"You will get the opportunity to see Barnes perform. I'm sure you've all been looking forward to seeing him perform "Last week, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn stated. "I believe it is past time for him to get out there and begin playing. Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Jalen Reeves-Maybin, too, deserve a chance to play for us. These are difficult decisions that you must make in order to move in that direction. You don't like all of them, but you need to grow as a team."
After releasing the 31-year-old veteran, the team will be liable for $5.3 million in a dead cap in 2021 and $6.33 million in 2022.
